THE STANDARD POODLE

ABOUT THE BREED

There are four approved poodle sizes in Norway, with the standard poodle, formerly known as the king poodle, being the largest of the varieties. France is adopted as the breed's country of origin.

Originally, they were used as water fetching bird dogs, but the breed is today classified as companion dogs.

COOPERATION

The standard poodle is a wise dog with an impeccably good mood and a good dose of humour. It is very cooperative and needs to be challenged mentally.

The standard poodle loves to work together with his owner.

It is not without reason that the breed is represented in most dog sports and as therapy dogs. It loves to learn and is considered one of the most intelligent dog breeds in the world.

GROOMING

The poodle is a breed that requires continuous grooming throughout its life. It is therefore necessary that the puppies get used to being handled during bathing, blowing, brushing, shaving and clipping.

The amount of work varies depending on how much fur you want to keep. A short-cut poodle is manageable for the vast majority of people, while a full show coat requires more effort.

ACTIVITY LEVEL

The poodle is considered to have a medium activity level. There are, of course, individual differences and it is very much up to the new owner to set up a level of activity that works for both parties. The poodle can be trained to withstand long walks at a good speed, but also appreciates quiet strolls in the forest.

It prefers to be with its owner, regardless of whether that means lying under the desk at work, sniffing around the garden or on longer mountain walks.

ALLERGEN-FRIENDLY

The poodle is known to be an allergy-friendly breed as it sheds and drools minimally and its coat is often washed.

The fact that it is considered allergy-friendly does not mean that it is allergy-free . Fur is just one of many ways allergens are spread around. Some may react to the dog's skin, saliva and urine.

HEALTH

IS THIS THE RIGHT BREED FOR ME?

The standard poodle is suitable for those who want to spend a lot of time with their dog. It is very cooperative, playful and easily motivated. It is gentle and loving and is perfect as a family dog.

If you are considering this breed, however, you must be aware that this is a dog that needs mental training to have a good life. It is more than happy to accompany you on your activities, be it competitions, utility work, as a visiting/therapy dog or other activities where the dog gets to use its wise head.
